Is Schizophrenia associated with Chemical Defect in the Brain?
Basic knowledge about brain chemistry and its link to schizophrenia is expanding rapidly. Neurotransmitters, substances that allow communication between nerve cells, have long been thought to be involved in the development of schizophrenia. It is likely, although not yet certain, that the disorder is associated with some imbalance of the complex, interacting chemical systems of the brain, probably involving the neurotransmitters dopamine and glutamate, amongst others. The symptoms of schizophrenia are thought to be intricately related to dopamine activity.
The individual’s ‘breakdown’ may occur as a result of drug or alcohol use, emotional stress or difficulties in life experiences. There is no scientific evidence to support the idea that parenting style can cause schizophrenia in their offspring, and the idea remains extremely controversial.
